Raising Elite Athletes

Raising Elite Athletes by Dr. Malcolm ConwayBy Dr. Malcolm Conway

Without a coaching background to fall back on, and with so much stress on athletes to perform today, parents are often left bewildered when it comes to helping their son or daughter excel in their sport.  They are even more confused when it comes to the many factors surrounding athletics including strength training, recovery, and nutrition. In an easy to understand sport language any struggling sports parent can become an expert in helping their child become the best athlete they can be.

Written specifically for parents of athletes from middle school to college, Dr. Malcolm Conway tears away the myths and falsehoods surrounding sports training, college recruiting, supplements, coaching, and even “over parenting.”  Dr. Conway walks you through the maze of how to truly know if your child is average or elite; how to handle an over aggressive coach, and even what questions to ask of a college recruiter to make sure you pick the right school for your child.

Dr. Conway has also interviewed 12 top world class professional athletes from different sports to ask them how they prepared as a young athlete.  This information is so valuable it will cut years off of the experience needed in helping develop an elite athlete.  Without a coaching background to fall back on, and with so much stress on athletes to perform today, parents are often left bewildered when it comes to helping their son or daughter excel in their sport.  They are even more confused when it comes to the many factors surrounding athletics including strength training, recovery, and nutrition. Times Have Changed

When I was a kid, you could roll out of bed and play whatever sport you wanted to without much training. If you had above-average talent, you would most likely move on to the next level because the competition wasn’t as intense as it is today. It doesn’t work that way
anymore. The bar has been raised too high. The bar will continue to be pushed upward as time goes on, so it’s a good idea for you to prepare appropriately.

If you feel that your son or daughter is an above-average athlete, he or she will probably need some help in developing their talents to be relevant to play at the next level. You, as the parent, will have to take it upon yourself to help them in attaining their goals. If possible, find someone who is knowledgeable in their sport and who has a developed an “eye” for improvement. An honest outside opinion can go a long way in the development of an elite athlete. You don’t need
to spend a fortune in hiring professional trainers, nutritionists, and others for their advancement. Someone who knows the sport and who has been there can help without you going broke.

The parent and the athlete must understand that, if the
athlete possesses the right passion and determination,
anything can be achieved.

Attitude has killed many athletes, even the athletes that have natural talent. There are tons of kids out there with an attitude of entitlement. An attitude that says, “Hey, I’m good, so I don’t have to
work.” That attitude is the kiss of death. Once you get to a certain level in sports, you will notice that everyone will have the same amount of talent. It’s up to you to develop the level of the work ethic and consistency that is needed to perform at this level. It takes a lot of work to get to the big leagues! Even if you have all of the talent in the world, there is someone waiting for you at the next level to drop you down a peg or two. Let’s say that you are interested in playing at a Division I school. This information is so valuable it will cut years off of the experience needed in helping develop an elite athlete.

Testimonials

Shoulder & Hip Pain

"I wanted to thank you for all you have done for me. After 13 years of shoulder pain, and 9 years of pain in my hip, I had forgotten what it is like to be pain free.

Thanks to your innovative therapy I can honestly say I am completely pain free. It is incredible to me that you were able to alleviate all of my pain in only 5 sessions.
Your physical therapy techniques to help me strengthen the injuries are brilliant. They get right to the root of what is really wrong and strengthen the body's core, instead of just putting a band aid on the injured muscle. I am sure this new from of training and exercise will not only continue to improve my strength, but will keep me from re-injury as well. As a fighter, this will give me a great edge over my opponents.

I would recommend anyone to your practice. I plan on continuing to come to you just to learn more of your exercises, even thought I'm 100% pain free. Thank you so much for this gift."

Much respect, Chris Ditroia
